Think Neck Pain is Normal? It's Not!

Neck pain can be a debilitating condition interfering with daily life. What can cause this pain? Some causes are injuries or abnormalities that affect muscles, ligaments, intervertebral discs and nerves, or the bones and joints of the spine. Damage can be caused by muscle strains, trauma such as from whiplash in a car accident, arthritis, osteoporosis or even just plain-old stress.  

 

Physical therapy has shown to be an effective way to treat and, more importantly, prevent neck pain. A therapist works to reduce pain and inflammation, increase strength and flexibility of tissues. He or she will also teach patients how exercise and lifestyle changes can help prevent future episodes of neck pain. Check out some of these suggestions for preventing neck pain and keeping your life productive and pain-free!

    • Take frequent breaks when sitting for long periods of time (such as at the office

    • Avoid sleeping on your stomac
    • Keep weight evenly distributed when carrying something heav
    • Use proper lifting technique
    • Stretch frequently and exercise regularl
    • Find ways to decrease your stress level overall through relaxation techniques or other methods
